why synthetic fabric stinks and ours mostly does not

synthetic means smelly. that is the received wisdom, and most synthetic clothing has earned it honestly. the fix everyone sells you is a chemical finish, an antimicrobial spray or a silver-treated tee, and it leaves in the wash water long before the shirt wears out.

the smell was never really about synthetic versus natural. it is about the shape the yarn is in, how much skin oil it can hide, and whether a wash gets that oil back out.

yes, most synthetic clothing stinks, and the sweat is not the reason

the smell comes from bacteria that already live on your skin, feeding on skin oil and the proteins in sweat, and leaving behind the sour, oniony stuff you can smell across a room. sweat itself comes out close to odorless. all a fabric does is decide how much of that oil it takes off your body and how long it holds it there.

skin oil is fatty and it does not mix with water. polyester and nylon do not mix with water either, so the oil moves into the fiber and stays put, sitting there between washes with a bacterial population working on it. cotton takes on water instead, which is why a cotton shirt feels soaked and a poly shirt feels dry and smells worse on day two. this is not a moral failing of plastic. it is chemistry, and it is predictable, which means it is also something you can build against.

the shape of the yarn decides how much oil hides in it

when researchers compared polyester garments built different ways, the item that gave off the least fiber was the one with a very compact woven structure and highly twisted yarns of continuous filament, and the worst were loose knits made of short staple fiber (De Falco et al., Environmental Science and Technology, 2020). they were measuring what comes off in the wash rather than what smells. same property, two jobs. a fuzzy surface made of millions of cut fiber ends has enormous area for oil to sit on, and a tight filament weave does not.

so two garments can be the same fiber on the label and behave completely differently on your body. here is the vocabulary, because the label almost never gives you any of it.

a wash only pulls the oil out if the water and the weave cooperate

oil is removed by detergent, agitation, and heat, and a fast cold cycle on a thick fleece delivers very little of any of them. the fabric holds the oil deep in a lofted knit, the water never really gets in, the shirt comes out clean-smelling for about an hour, and then it turns while you wear it. everyone has had this shirt.

fabric softener makes it worse, because it works by coating the fiber, and a coated fiber sheds oil less easily. the shirt you own is roughly as clean as your washing habits let it be, and the fabric decides how much slack those habits get.

but the antimicrobial finish is a chemical sitting on top of the problem

an antimicrobial finish kills bacteria for a while, it never takes away the oil they eat, and it leaves the garment gradually every time you wash it. the fiber underneath is exactly the same fiber it was in the shop.

the wider habit is worth seeing clearly. when researchers tested 72 children’s textile products sold as stain resistant, they detected PFAS in every one of them (Xia et al., Environmental Science and Technology, 2022). different finish, different chemistry, same move: spray a coating on to do a job the material was never built to do. we have not lab-tested a silver-treated shirt. what we can say flatly is that a finish has a service life and a woven yarn does not.

where cordura nylon actually sits, and where we are guessing

cordura is high-tenacity nylon 6,6 filament yarn, graded by denier, per INVISTA, the company that makes the fiber. filament, so almost no cut ends. woven tight, because that is what gives it abrasion resistance in the first place. structurally it is the opposite end of the range from a loose staple knit, which is the build that holds the most oil.

there is some wash evidence pointing the same direction. in a study that washed 37 consumer textiles five times each, woven filament nylon released roughly a sixth as much fiber per wash as the cotton and wool samples did (Vassilenko et al., PLOS ONE, 2021). a fabric that is not falling apart at the surface is also not building surface area for oil to collect on.

now the honest part. nobody has published an odor panel on this fabric, and we have not run one, so what we have is fiber structure plus three years of wearing the thing every day. the other reason our jackets do fine is duller than chemistry: a jacket sits over a shirt, so it takes a fraction of the skin oil your base layer takes. the layer against your skin is where this fight is actually won, and that is what the t-shirt I always wanted and the LSd̶T are for.

what to actually do about it, whatever your jacket is made of

none of this requires you to buy anything from us. four things matter more than any spray on the shelf.

  • wash the base layer more often than the outer layer. the shirt touching your skin collects the oil. the jacket over it mostly collects dust and sawdust.
  • run the occasional warm cycle. cold water is easier on the fabric and worse at removing fat. alternate.
  • skip the fabric softener entirely. it coats the fiber, and a coated fiber gives the oil up more slowly every wash after that.
  • hang it up between wears instead of balling it in a bag. air and time kill a surprising amount of the bacterial load for free.

frequently asked questions

can you get the smell out of a shirt that already stinks?

usually yes, and not with a normal cycle. soak it in warm water with an oxygen bleach powder for a few hours before washing, or run a cup of white vinegar in the wash, both of which cut the oil the detergent left behind. if a shirt has been sour for a year and lives in a heap, sometimes the answer is no, and that is what the shop rag pile is for.

does washing in cold water make clothes smell?

it contributes, because fat does not release well at low temperature and most modern cycles are short as well as cool. wash the shirts that touch your skin warm every few loads and keep the outer layers cold, which also keeps the colors from fading.

how often should i wash a work jacket?

far less often than you wash what is under it, since almost none of your skin oil reaches it. we wash ours when it is visibly dirty or when it has been rained on and dried in a car, which for most of the year works out to every few weeks.

does the smell mean the fabric is breaking down?

no. odor is oil and bacteria on the surface and inside the fiber, and it says nothing about the strength of the yarn. a garment can smell terrible and be structurally perfect, which is exactly why washing it properly is worth the effort instead of replacing it.

what should i look at on a label if i want something that will not go sour?

look for woven rather than loose knit, for filament yarns rather than brushed or fuzzy surfaces, and for whether the anti-odor claim describes the fiber or a treatment applied to it. if the claim is a treatment, ask how many washes it survives, and notice how rarely anyone will tell you.

so, does synthetic fabric get smelly easily?

a lot of it does, badly, and the ones that do have loose fuzzy staple surfaces, sit right against your skin, and get washed cold and fast. that is a build problem and a laundry problem, and both of them are visible before you buy. a tight weave of continuous filament, worn as an outer layer and washed like you mean it, is a very different garment from a brushed poly tee, even though the label says plastic either way. the shape of the yarn, the oil it hides, and the wash that pulls it back out. that is the answer, and no spray was involved in any of it.

we built against the oil problem rather than spraying something over it. the Task Jacket is $275, cut from cordura nylon with muchos pockets, and the Task Pant is $198 in organic long-staple cotton blended with cordura for stretch. long staple means longer fibers and fewer ends per inch of yarn, which is the same property doing the work in both the smell argument and the durability argument. our materials run about 7 to 10X traditional uniform, which is most of why the lead time is long and why things go out of stock.
