what ripstop fabric actually stops, and when it does nothing

the word does a lot of work in a product description. ripstop. it reads as tough, buyers take it that way, and then the pants wear through at the knee anyway and nobody can figure out why the tough fabric quit.
so here is what that grid is actually doing, and the failure it has no opinion about at all.
the grid is what makes ripstop tear resistant
ripstop is a base cloth with thicker, stronger yarns woven in at regular intervals in both directions. hold a piece up to a window and you can see the squares. when a snag or a puncture starts a tear, that tear runs along the light yarns until it reaches one of the heavy ones, and the heavy one takes much more force to break, so the tear stops in that square instead of running the length of your sleeve.
that is the job. it is a good job. it is also one job.

ripstop stops a tear and stays quiet about everything else
a fabric can fail on you in more than one way, and ripstop only shows up for one of them. sort the failures first and the fabric spec starts making sense.
- tear propagation. you catch a pocket on a nail or a branch, a small hole opens, and it runs. this is the one ripstop is built against, and it works.
- abrasion. no single event, just a knee on plywood and a seat on a truck bench, thousands of times, until the cloth thins out and goes. ripstop does nothing here that the base fiber was not already doing.
- seams. the thread and the stitch give out before the cloth does. a weave cannot help you with this either.
so a light ripstop nylon shell can be genuinely hard to tear and still be thin, slick, and quick to grind through. both things are true at once, and the tag only tells you about the first one.
abrasion is what actually kills a pair of work pants
work pants almost never die from a dramatic rip. they die slowly at the knee and the seat, and then at the seams. when researchers went through UK clothing that charities had rejected as unfit to resell, half the work trousers had fabric breakdown like fraying and thinning, and 42% had holes in their seams (Cooper, Hughes and Claxton, PLATE, 2015).
that is the failure most people are actually buying against when they reach for the word tough. it is a grinding problem. a tear-stopping grid is aimed somewhere else entirely, so if the knees are what you keep replacing, the grid is not the thing to shop for.
Cordura is built against the grinding
Cordura is high-tenacity nylon 6,6, and in workwear it usually shows up blended into a cotton body so the garment still feels like cloth while the nylon takes the rubbing. INVISTA, the company that makes the fiber, has put a cotton body blended with its nylon 6,6 staple at four times the abrasion resistance of a traditional 100% cotton duck of comparable weight.
four times, on rubbing. that is a different number than a tear number, and it is the one that decides whether your knees make it through the winter. the same idea keeps showing up in the lab: wrapping cotton around a nylon filament core raised a yarn’s abrasion resistance by 204%, and the best fabric spun that way lost only 10% of its mass after 25,000 rubs on a Martindale machine (Ye, Yin and Yang, Journal of the Textile Institute, 2025).
nylon in the body of the cloth is a durability decision. a grid woven into a shell is a tear decision. both are honest, they just answer different questions.
a rub count tells you more than the price tag does
if you want to know whether a fabric survives abrasion, the number to want is rubs on a Martindale test, not the price. a UK lab abraded 17 pairs of jeans bought from high street and online brands and found the weakest pair gave out after 15,000 rubs while the toughest survived 105,000, and price could not predict which was which (Guo, Morris, Sumner and Taylor, Cleaner and Responsible Consumption, 2025).
seven times the life, and the tag on the front told you nothing. we sell a $198 pant, so we will take that one on the chin: spending more does not buy you durability by itself. it buys you durability when the money went into the fiber and the sewing, and you can ask a small company exactly where it went.
ask which failure the fabric was built against
pick the failure that happens to you, then pick the fabric. that is the whole method, and it takes about thirty seconds in front of a product page.

frequently asked questions
is ripstop fabric waterproof?
no. ripstop is a weave, and water resistance comes from a coating or a wax finish applied on top of whatever the weave is. plenty of ripstop shells are also coated, which is why the two get confused.
how can you tell if a fabric is ripstop?
hold it up to a light and look for a faint grid of squares, where the heavier yarns cross the lighter ones. you can usually feel the ridges with a fingernail too. if there is no visible grid, it is not ripstop, whatever the copy says.
is ripstop stronger than cotton duck?
it is harder to tear and usually much lighter. cotton duck is heavier and generally holds up better to rubbing, which is the failure that takes out most knees and seats. they are strong in two different directions.
what does denier mean on a fabric spec?
denier is a measure of yarn weight per unit of length, so a higher number means a heavier, thicker yarn. 500D and 1000D are the common Cordura workwear weights. denier tells you about the yarn, not about how the fabric was woven or sewn.
can a ripstop tear be repaired?
yes, and the grid is the reason it is worth doing. because the tear stopped inside one square, you are patching a small square instead of a long split, which a sewing machine or a good iron-on patch handles fine. left alone, that hole will still grow at the edges.
so, what ripstop is worth
ripstop is real and it earns its name. a tear starts, it hits a heavy yarn, it stops. what it does not do is stand between your knees and the plywood, and no amount of grid saves a thin fabric from a slow grind.
so read the fabric by the failure it was built against. ask if there is a tear grid, ask if there is nylon in the body doing abrasion work, and ask who sewed the seams, because one of those three is what will actually give out on you. tough is not one thing, and a jacket that looks tough and a jacket that is tough are separated by exactly that question.
