the fit guide for bigger builds and tall frames
by Part Wild
·
the standard advice for a tall man with a bigger build is to buy big and tall sizing, skim the body, and let a tailor fix the rest. that covers where a pant sits when you stand still.
you do not stand still. a bigger frame loads a pant harder, and the crotch seam, the knee, and the seat take the strain first.
big and tall sizing only tells you where a pant sits at rest
big and tall sizing fixes length and width, so the pant sits right while you stand there. that is good advice and it is half the answer. the other half is what happens when you squat, kneel, and reach, because a bigger frame puts more body on the same crotch seam, knee, and seat.
a tailor can shorten a hem, take in a waist, or trim a torso. a tailor cannot move a seam that was built in the wrong place or add give to a cloth that has none. so the order matters: check the fit points that a tailor cannot fix first, then let the tailor handle the rest.
check the shoulders and chest before anything else
the shoulder seam should land on the edge of your shoulder, and the cloth should lie flat across your chest with no sideways pull. if the seam sits out on your arm, or the front pulls into an X when you reach, the size is wrong. no hem fixes that.
this is the one place where we say buy it right the first time. sleeves and torso length can be trimmed later, shoulders cannot. if you try our task jacket, task vest, or the t-shirt I always wanted, run the same check before you worry about anything else.
check the rise before you trust the waist number
rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the waistband, and on a tall frame with a bigger build it decides almost everything. the waist number can be perfect and the pant still fails, because a short rise rides low, tugs the seat down, and pulls the crotch seam tight every time you sit or squat.
look for a pant that sits on your natural waist instead of down on your hips. a medium to high rise keeps the seat seam where your body actually is. put the pant on, sit down in it, and feel where the seam lands. if you notice it, the rise is wrong.
the seat seam is the first thing a bigger frame loads
the seat seam is where a bigger build shows up first, because there is more body to bend and the stitching carries all of it. a pant that looks fine standing can split here the first week you crouch at a bench or climb a ladder.
run these checks before you buy, in the fitting room, with the pant on:
- full squat: go all the way down and hold it. nothing should bind at the crotch or ride down off your hips.
one-knee kneel: lower onto one knee as if you are looking under a bench. the knee should not fight you.
- overhead reach: lift both arms. the waistband should stay put and the seat should stay covered.
- sit and stand: do it five times. if the seam bites once, it bites all day.
inseam is the fix a tailor does best
take the length up at the hem, because that is cheap and simple. so buy for the parts a tailor cannot change, which are rise, seat, and thigh, and let the inseam follow.
for a tall man the risk runs the other way. check that there is cloth in the hem to let down, because a pant with no extra length stays short no matter who you hand it to. a hem you can adjust is a fix. a hem with nothing left is a problem you bought.
pick a cut with room to bend that does not billow
skip skinny pants that cling, and skip parachute pants that swallow your frame. you want a straight or athletic cut with room through the thigh and seat and a clean line down the leg. the room is for bending. the clean line is so you do not look like you are wearing a tent.
that is how we cut ours. clean, minimal, no big logos, on purpose, so the same pant goes from the wood shop to a client lunch without a costume change. the cut should do the work, not the logo.
look for stretch built into the cloth so the pant gives where you move
stretch belongs in the cloth, so the pant gives where you bend instead of fighting you at the knee. our task pant is organic long-staple cotton against your leg with Cordura nylon where the wear is, and the Cordura brings durability, odor resistance, breathability, and stretch. it feels broken in the day it arrives.
we keep cotton against your leg for a reason. Cotton Incorporated and Cotton Council International’s 2020 durability survey found that items made of 100% cotton are kept 1.5 years longer than items with less or no cotton. people hold on to cotton, and a pant you want to wear is a pant that actually gets worn.
comfort is the product here. cheap pants that fight you all day wreck your mood and your output, and that is true on a day when you only wear them for the afternoon.
our sizes run 0 to 5, and that does not cover every build
the sizes we make run 0 to 5. that is the range, and it does not fit every tall man with a bigger build. we are two people, the inventory is limited, and the line is small on purpose.
the cloth is hard to make and gets sewn in Portugal, so we cannot spin up a big and tall run on a whim. if you are not sure a 5 reaches around you, shoot us a note with your measurements before you order. we would rather you ask than guess.
how the cloth and the maker differ across five pant brands
we are the only one here making our own cotton-and-Cordura cloth, which is why we can say where the stretch comes from.
| Brand | Cloth | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| part wild | Cotton against the leg, Cordura nylon where the wear is | Two people in Brooklyn, sewn in Portugal |
| Carhartt WIP | Heavy cotton in heritage work cuts | Large global fashion brand, seasonal collections |
| Dickies | Basic durable-press work cloth | Mass-produced, sold everywhere |
| Gramicci | Hard-wearing canvas, diamond-gusseted crotch | Japan-based lifestyle brand, volume production |
| Grease Point Workwear | Japanese selvedge denim and other sourced fabrics | Five people in Portland, Oregon |
the fit rule for a bigger build covers movement, not just the standing pose
a tailor fixes where the pant sits. the rise, the seat seam, the cut, and the cloth decide how it holds when you bend, and those four are the ones to check first. a pant built only for standing still is the problem a bigger frame finds fastest.
frequently asked questions
what is big and tall sizing?
big and tall sizing adds length and room together, so you get more torso, sleeve, and inseam length along with extra width. a standard XXL adds width without the length. it fixes where the garment sits, and you still need to check rise and seat for movement.
should a tall man with a bigger build wear a high rise?
a medium to high rise usually works best, because it sits on your natural waist and keeps the seat seam where your body is. a low rise slides down and pulls tight when you sit or squat. try the pant on and sit down in it before you decide.
are baggy pants better for a bigger build?
no. baggy parachute pants swallow your frame and billow when you move. a straight or athletic cut gives you the room you need through the thigh and seat while keeping a clean line.
can a tailor fix pants that bind when I squat?
a tailor can adjust the hem and the waist. a tailor cannot add stretch to the cloth or fix a rise that is too short. if the pant binds in a full squat in the fitting room, move on.
do your pants come in big and tall sizes?
no. our sizes run 0 to 5, and that is the range. if you are not sure it covers you, shoot us a note with your measurements before you order.
Part Wild Task Pant Cordura Construction Sizes 0-5
a bigger frame loads the crotch seam, the knee, and the seat first, so we put Cordura nylon where the wear is and keep organic long-staple cotton against your leg. the task pant is $198 and it gives where you move because the stretch is in the cloth.
we wore it for three years before we sold it. we donated the first run to a farm for a whole season and the farmers bought more. people have come back from a two-week masonry course where everyone else’s pants ripped and theirs did not. sizes run 0 to 5 in navy, brown, light blue, and bright green, and it ships from Brooklyn within about 7 business days.
part wild makes the pant for the frame that loads the seat seam hardest, with Cordura where it wears and sizes 0 to 5. shoot us a note if you want to check your measurements before you order.
