ask which is tougher, cordura or canvas, and you will have an answer in about four seconds, from a product page, with no test attached to it. somebody says cordura is ten times more abrasion resistant than cotton duck, everyone repeats it, and if you go looking for the test that produced that number, there isn’t one.
there is a real number, though, and it is four. it is smaller, it is sourceable, and it still wins the argument.
the ten-times claim has no test method behind it
you can find the ten-times line on retailer copy all over the internet, and you cannot find the lab that produced it. no fabric weight, no rub count, no standard named, no method. a durability number with no method attached is a sentence somebody wrote to move a jacket, and once enough people repeat it, it starts to sound like physics.
this matters more in workwear than almost anywhere else, because durability is the pitch. every brand in the category claims it. almost none of them tell you how it was measured, or against what, or at what fabric weight. so the argument gets decided by whoever wrote the bolder sentence.
we are not interested in that fight. we are interested in the number you can go check.
four times is what invista actually published
cordura duck, meaning a cotton body blended with nylon 6,6 staple fiber, carries four times the abrasion resistance of a comparable-weight traditional 100% cotton duck, per invista, the company that makes the fiber, reported in textile world back in 2011. comparable weight is the load-carrying part of that sentence. same ounces, same use, one of them has nylon in it.
four is a strong number precisely because of who published it. this is the fiber’s own maker, with every commercial reason on earth to print the biggest defensible multiple it had, and it printed four. that is a ceiling, and it is a ceiling with a fabric comparison behind it.
ten came from nobody in particular. four came from the people who make the yarn.
denier is yarn weight, abrasion is a rubbing test
most of the vocabulary in this argument gets used loosely, so here is what the words actually mean before anybody starts comparing.

a higher denier means a heavier, tougher yarn. abrasion resistance is measured by rubbing fabric against an abradant until it gives out, on a machine, under a stated load. neither of those numbers tells you how a pair of pants dies in real life, which we will get to.
the useful question is where the nylon goes in the cotton body
cordura duck is a cotton fabric with nylon in it, which means the fight everyone stages between cordura and canvas is a fight between one fabric and a version of the same fabric. the four-times figure is a comparison between cotton duck and cotton duck built with nylon staple. that is a construction decision, and it is the one behind the task pant and the task jacket.
we build the body from organic long-staple cotton, from the one region of the world that grows it, and put cordura where the abuse lands. the nylon is doing three separate jobs in there:
- durability. it is the part that survives the crawling, the kneeling, the tailgate, the ladder.
- odor resistance and breathability. you wear this every day, so it has to not stink and not cook you.
- stretch. cotton duck alone does not move. this does, which is why it feels broken in on day one instead of day ninety.
that is why we say uniform now instead of workwear. a fabric that only survives is not enough. it has to be comfortable enough to wear to a client lunch and then to dinner, or you will stop wearing it, and a pant you stopped wearing has zero abrasion resistance.
but the wash is where pure cotton quietly gives up
repeated laundering takes strength out of cotton faster than it takes strength out of a blend. after 100 industrial wash cycles, 100% cotton fabric lost up to 29% of its maximum breaking force, while 50/50 cotton and synthetic blends lost about 20% (Jasinska, Scientific Reports, 2023). that test used polyester, so read it as direction rather than as our spec. the direction is the point: the pure fiber gave up more.
nobody puts a garment on an abrasion machine at home. you put it in a washer, twice a week, for years, which is the stress that actually accumulates. the same pattern shows up in how long people keep things. across a wardrobe survey covering tens of thousands of garments in five countries, cotton items had the shortest lifespans of any fiber group measured (Laitala and Klepp, Sustainability, 2020).
we love cotton. we build the body out of it. it also needs help, and nylon is the help.
work pants die at the knees, the seams, and the fit
an abrasion score does not predict how long your pants last, because most clothes get thrown out for reasons a rub-test never touches. work trousers are the exception, and they fail structurally: in an inspection of uk clothing rejected as unfit to resell, half the work trousers had fabric breakdown such as fraying or thinning, and 42% had holes in their seams (Cooper, Hughes and Claxton, PLATE, 2015).
so the reinforcement has to be in the right places, and the sewing has to hold, or the fabric number is decoration. paying more does not automatically get you either one. a uk lab that tested 50 garments found retail price could not predict physical durability at all, with the cheapest t-shirt in the set outranking six more expensive ones (Guo, Morris, Sumner and Taylor, Cleaner and Responsible Consumption, 2025). $198 buys you nothing on its own. what it buys is a specific build, or it buys nothing.
our version of proof is not a lab. we wore the first run for three years. someone came back from a two-week masonry course where everyone else’s pants ripped and his didn’t. that is the test we actually care about.

yes, it has held up on job sites for a century and it will keep doing that. it just loses strength faster in the wash than a blend does, and it does not move with you unless somebody engineers stretch into it.
does a cotton and cordura blend feel like plastic?
no, because the body is cotton and that is what sits against you. the nylon is in there for abrasion resistance, odor resistance, breathability, and stretch, which is why the pant feels broken in the first day rather than the first year.

wash it less often and dry it gently, since laundering is where fabric strength actually goes. and fix a seam the week it opens instead of the month it opens, because seams are where work trousers most often fail.
